The Nice Carnival, the fourth largest carnival in the world after those of Rio, Venice, and New Orleans, takes place every winter between February and March for two weeks. Although the Nice Festival Committee has carefully organized it in its current form since 1873, the Nice Carnival was first mentioned by Charles II, Duke of Anjou and Count of Provence, at the end of the 13th century, in 1294!
The Nice Carnival is a vibrant and colorful spectacle exclusively organized by local craftsmen and craftswomen that will brighten up your winter stay in Nice. Since the 19th century, the highlight of the event has been, without a doubt, the King, a figure about 15 meters tall on an enormous float, followed by his subjects. At the time, the King symbolized the reversal of hierarchies and social norms: he became a figure of satire, caricatured and mocked.
The Battle of Flowers, created in 1876, was initially meant as simple entertainment, but over time it has evolved into a magnificent parade showcasing local flower production on beautifully decorated floats. Costumed performers parade aboard the floats, throwing impressive amounts of flowers to the crowds.
Lou Queernaval is France’s very first LGBTQIA+ carnival! It is independently organized and takes place during the second week of the Nice Carnival. Expect dazzling costumes and rainbow-colored floats in an event filled with a spirit of solidarity.
The Nice Carnival concludes with the burning of the Carnival King: a large wooden effigy is set on fire on Place Masséna or along the Promenade des Anglais.
